Bernard M’ba’s short film “El novio perfecto, corazón oscuro” has been selected for the Jameson Notodofilmfest competition. Music by Gonzalo García. http://www.notodofilmfest.com/#/Sala/Ficha/2375/
The composition starts with the melody hummed by the bride, which is accompanied by a few brief piano notes. This motivic material is the backbone and gives musical and narrative unity to the short film, since the rest of the blocks are variations that evolve with the emotional content of the narration.
The musical theme will be orchestrated in its entirety by the piano and strings at a later moment. In the climax scene, the technique of retrogradation of the audio material has been used (hearing it as if it were played backwards), which in turn is accompanied by brief motvichordic fragments of the main theme, together with pizzicatti from the strings. This material has been generated with dodecaphonic technique to underline the pathological process of the protagonist, since this procedure avoids sonorous stability.
The final block creates a bittersweet contrast; moment of conversation of the groom with his “alter ego”. It is, again, variation of the main theme with romantic piano style. It marks a counterpoint with the emotional and psychological tension of the characters creating a contrasting idyllic state, but which is distorted in the last measures to reveal the true tragic message of the story told.
